Brookhaven National Laboratory Case Study
Challenge
Brookhaven National Laboratory, the multi-program national research laboratory for the Department of Energy (DOE), was faced with an upcoming federal security audit and recognized the need to improve their system administration and develop a more formal administration process. The facility generates a massive amount of data used by more than 400 staff scientists, 4,000 visiting scientists, and thousands of collaborators around the world. Analyzing, processing, and transmitting this data demands a highly available computing and networking environment. However, the collaborative nature of the facility creates a substantial security challenge. As a federally funded facility, budget constraints were also a consideration.
